28 Sep The Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Ahmet Aras attended the Climate Summit to be held in Nice on September 26-27
The Climate Summit, a comprehensive summit on the global climate crisis that took place on September 26-27 in Nice, France, brought together experts, scientists, political leaders and business representatives, with a particular focus on marine ecosystems and their impacts on the Mediterranean region. Mr. Aras, attended the Climate Summit as a speaker and discussed strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on oceans and seas. The event, organized by the Metropolitan of Nice Côte d’Azur, the City of Nice and La Tribune newspaper, also aims to increase environmental resilience in marine and coastal areas by bringing together local and global solutions.
“We met with the Deputy Mayor of Cannes, Mr. Thomas de Pariente, to discuss strengthening our strategic partnerships, and we talked about Cannes’ successful methods of revitalizing year-round tourism, cultural tourism and maritime tourism. We agreed to establish joint efforts between Muğla and Cannes.
In the following part of our visit, we examined the Nice Haliotis 2 Waste Water Recycling Plant, one of the largest facilities in Europe, and decided to initiate joint works with MUSKI.”
Afterwards, we held efficient meetings with Nice Municipality delegation, Antibes Mayor and Sophia-Antipolis Technology Zone officials and examined exemplary projects on smart cities, artificial intelligence, health, maritime, clean energy and cyber security.
We will continue to strengthen our Muğla at the international level, develop innovative projects and bring the best practices together with our local dynamics.
Mayor Aras Attended the Climate Summit and Signed the Brest – Sea’ties Declaration
The Climate Summit Nice Côte d’Azur was organized in cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality of Nice, the City of Nice and La Tribune Newspaper, and hosted by Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi, with the participation of Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Ahmet Aras as a speaker. The summit brought together politicians, scientists and business representatives from around the world to discuss climate change and the protection of marine ecosystems. The Nice Climate Summit made valuable contributions to global climate efforts.
Mayor Aras; “Local governments should be leaders in resilience initiatives”
In his speech at the Climate Summit, Ahmet Aras, Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and President of the Union of Coastal Aegean Municipalities, explained the steps taken by Muğla in the efforts to cope with climate change, the critical role played by local governments in this process and the projects carried out for the protection of marine ecosystems. Offering concrete solutions for the protection of ecosystems in the Mediterranean Region, Mayor Aras underlined that local governments should be in a leading position in resilience initiatives and shared his views with the participants about the example studies in Gökova Bay.
At the Climate Summit, Mayor Aras’ speech on the challenges faced by local governments in the face of climate change and what needs to be done to overcome them ensured that the Aegean Sea’s climate crisis-related problems and solutions were on the global agenda.
The Nice Climate Summits, organized for the second time this year, are seen as an important step in preparation for the United Nations Ocean Conference to be held in June 2025. Increasing marine protected areas, strengthening climate monitoring systems and developing global cooperation were among the main agenda items of the summit.
Mayor Aras Signed the Brest – Sea’ties Declaration
The Brest -Sea’ties Declaration, supported by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, with Spain, Norway, Italy, Portugal and the United Kingdom, on the initiative of France and supported by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, committing to a joint effort designed to mitigate the effects of sea level rise and increase the resilience of coastlines, was signed by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras. The Declaration emphasizes the urgency of coordinated local and international efforts to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the acceleration of sea level rise caused by climate change. The Declaration brings together coastal cities from around the world, including Houston, New Orleans, Nice, Oslo, Venice, Stockholm, Vancouver and Xiamen.
Mayor Aras Visited Monaco
Ahmet Aras, Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and President of the Union of Coastal Aegean Municipalities, also had an opportunity to meet with Mr. Guillaume Rose, General Manager of the Monaco Chamber of Commerce (Monaco Economic Board), Mr. Samy Touati, Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment, Didier Zoccola, founder of the Scientific Research Center specializing in Marine Biology and the Coral World Conservatory, about his ongoing projects in Monaco during his visit to France.
Mayor Aras also visited the Monaco Yachting Fair and met with Turkish companies present there.
