Important Statements on the Mediterranean from Mayor Aras in Barcelona

Ahmet Aras, Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and President of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union, participated as a speaker in the MedCities General Assembly held in Barcelona, Spain. In his speech, Mayor Aras emphasized that dialogue, trust, and cooperation are essential for addressing the challenges facing the Mediterranean.

The MedCities (Mediterranean Cities Network) General Assembly convened in Barcelona, Spain. The meeting featured remarks by Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni, Muğla Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Aras, Mersin Metropolitan Mayor Vahap Seçer, and MedCities Vice-President Clare Hart. Headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, MedCities—a global network of metropolitan cities—has been drawing attention for 30 years with its work on cooperation and knowledge sharing among major cities around the world.

During the MedCities General Assembly and its side events held in Barcelona, mayors, policymakers, academics, and civil society representatives from across the Mediterranean came together. This gathering, which enabled local governments to share their experiences and discuss ways to strengthen cooperation, enhanced Muğla’s visibility on the international stage while also reinforcing its goals for intercity collaboration.

President Aras: “Cooperation Must Continue for a Strong Mediterranean”

Speaking at the MedCities General Assembly, Ahmet Aras, President of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union and Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, underlined that dialogue, trust, and cooperation are essential to addressing the challenges facing the Mediterranean. Emphasising the importance of regional collaboration built on a shared sea and shared hopes, President Aras said: “Just as the Barcelona Process, with its 30 years of experience, provides a common vision for intercity cooperation; it also serves as an important source of motivation for Turkish cities. The MedCities General Assembly we attended is a platform that will strengthen Muğla’s participation in international projects. For this reason, representing and showcasing Muğla at such an influential assembly is highly valuable. These relationships must continue in a resilient, cooperative spirit in order to build a strong Mediterranean.”
