{"id":1332,"date":"2025-04-11T16:24:19","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T13:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldcitymugla.org\/?p=1332"},"modified":"2025-05-13T16:25:54","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T13:25:54","slug":"major-event-for-the-future-of-the-mediterranean-by-the-metropolitan-municipality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldcitymugla.org\/en\/major-event-for-the-future-of-the-mediterranean-by-the-metropolitan-municipality\/","title":{"rendered":"Major Event for the Future of the Mediterranean by the Metropolitan Municipality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In collaboration with Mu\u011fla Metropolitan Municipality, Mente\u015fe Municipality, and the Institut Fran\u00e7ais T\u00fcrkiye, the &#8220;Mediterraneo \u2013 Mediterranean, A Sea under Pressure&#8221; photography exhibition and the documentary screening <em>East to West: the Mediterranean<\/em> were held in Mente\u015fe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition combined underwater photographs by world-renowned explorer and photographer Laurent Ballesta\u2014taken in the Cap Corse Protected Area of Corsica, France\u2014with images captured by Tony Viacara at important diving sites in G\u00f6kova Gulf and Bodrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening ceremony, hosted at the historic Sekiba\u015f\u0131 Hammam, was graced by the President of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union and Mayor of Mu\u011fla Metropolitan Municipality, Ahmet Aras, Mente\u015fe Municipality\u2019s Mayor Gonca K\u00f6ksal, Director of the French Cultural Center Gilles Roulland, Deputy Director Fabien Flori, along with representatives from NGOs and art enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1065\" src=\"https:\/\/worldcitymugla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/akdeniz-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1334\" style=\"width:525px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Exhibition &#8220;The Mediterranean, A Sea Under Pressure&#8221; Is Open Until May 7<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curated with narration by director Mert G\u00f6kalp, the exhibition aimed to raise awareness on environmental issues while shedding light on the shared destiny of the Mediterranean through the lenses of artists from different geographies. It was open to the public from April 9 to May 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Documentary Screening <em>East to West: The Mediterranean<\/em> Was Held<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the event, the documentary was screened on April 10 at the Konakalt\u0131 \u0130skender Alper Cultural Center. Featuring marine biologist, writer, underwater photographer, and director Mert G\u00f6kalp, the screening gave attendees deeper insights into nature and marine life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gilles Roulland: &#8220;We Can Solve Problems by Coming Together&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one can solve problems alone. We must come together to do so, which is why we seek collaboration,\u201d said Roulland. \u201cThanks to this team for uniting all stakeholders to find a solution. Those who visit the exhibition will understand why it is vital to protect the Mediterranean. I thank Mayor Ahmet Aras for this partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mayor K\u00f6ksal: &#8220;Let\u2019s Not Forget the Mediterranean is Our Shared Heritage&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are honored to host this meaningful event,\u201d said Mayor of Mente\u015fe Municipality, Gonca K\u00f6ksal. \u201cIn a historic venue like Sekiba\u015f\u0131 Hammam, we are showcasing these exceptional photographs from both the eastern and western Mediterranean. Some were taken right here in G\u00f6kova Gulf. As we feel the effects of the climate crisis, let\u2019s not forget that the Mediterranean is our shared heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mayor Aras: &#8220;Mediterranean Culture Is a Microculture That Must Be Preserved&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Aras emphasized the historical ties between T\u00fcrkiye and Francefor hundreds of years and their ongoing contributions. \u201cThis powerful exhibition shows the unique world beneath the Mediterranean\u2014its richness and fragility. Climate change, rising sea temperatures, invasive species, plastic and chemical pollution are destroying its natural balance. The Mediterranean is sounding an alarm. Every image here reminds us that the sea\u2019s depths are just as captivating and worth protecting. The Mediterranean is our shared memory and heritage.
