Starting from the 2000s BC, the Karlar\n(Carians) began settling in the region. In the 1000s BC, the Dorians from the\nGreek mainland arrived in the area and established a total of 6 city-states: 3\non the island of Rhodes, 1 on the island of Kos, 1 on the Bodrum Peninsula, and\n1 on the Dat\u00e7a Peninsula. The central city-state among these was Knidos, which\nwas established on the Dat\u00e7a Peninsula.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Initially established in the Burgaz\narea, 2 kilometers northeast of the modern city center of Dat\u00e7a, Knidos\nflourished and became wealthy in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. After the defeat\nof the Lydian State by the Persians in 546 BC, it came under Persian rule. The\noriginal site of Knidos at Burgaz is notable for its ancient ruins. According\nto Professor Dr. Numan Tuna, this area is described as the place where the six\nDoric city-states mentioned by Herodotus held competitions in honor of Apollo.\nThe famous Temple of Apollo, where the prizes were kept, is also located here.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The excavation results, particularly\nthe findings from the lower terrace, indicate that the Emecik Sar\u0131 Liman Sacred\nArea held significant maritime importance until the late 6th century BC. Among\nthe findings, there are imported goods from Egypt, Phoenicia, and Etruria, as\nwell as local artifacts such as limestone and fired clay figurines and pottery\nexamples unique to Knidos.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The epigraphic data and valuable votive\nobjects found in the sacred area at Sar\u0131 Liman confirm the connection of the\nregion with Apollo. Excavations at the Temple of Apollo have uncovered votives,\nstatues, and figurines dating back to the 8th-9th centuries BC. Additionally,\nexcavations around the temple revealed that other temples and churches from\nlater periods were also built in the area.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
In the 4th century BC, Knidos was moved\nto the cape of Tekir, the tip of the peninsula for the purpose of trade. In the\nsame century, it came under the rule of Alexander the Great. From the 2nd\ncentury AD, with the division of the Roman Empire, it came under the rule of\nthe Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. Due to major earthquakes and the Arab\ninvasions of the 7th century AD, Knidos was largely destroyed and abandoned.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The Dat\u00e7a Peninsula remained within the\nterritories of the Mente\u015f\u00e2 Principality from the second half of the 13th\ncentury to the first quarter of the 15th century. In the 15th century, the\nOttomans incorporated the Mente\u015f\u00e2 Principality into their territories, and the\nregion became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1909, during the reign of Ottoman\nSultan Mehmed V (Sultan Re\u015fad), the name of Dat\u00e7a was changed to Re\u015fadiye, but\nit was restored to Dat\u00e7a during the period of the Republic of T\u00fcrkiye. In 1928,\nDat\u00e7a became a district of Mu\u011fla province, with its center located in the\nRe\u015fadiye neighborhood. In 1947, the district center was moved to the\npresent-day \u0130skele neighborhood.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Ancient City of Knidos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Knidos was moved to the tip of the\npeninsula in the 4th century BC for commercial reasons. According to Strabo,\nthe city was located along the coast and on the island in front of it. Two\nharbors were created: the North Harbor for military purposes and the South\nHarbor for trade. Today, remnants of the harbors can still be seen.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The city is renowned for the statue of\nAphrodite and numerous temples. The Aphrodite statue, created by Praxiteles,\nwas highly celebrated in ancient times. Knidos was an important center of\nculture and trade during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Notable figures such\nas Eudoxus, Praxiteles, and Sostratus lived here. Among the ruins of the city\nare the pedestal of the Aphrodite statue, a theater, and the Temple of Demeter.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Although Palamutb\u00fck\u00fc has a stony beach\nrather than a sandy one, it stands out for its natural beauty and quite atmosphere.\nThe unique scenery and serenity here captivate every visitor.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Gerence Bay<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Dat\u00e7a Peninsula, one of the most\nimpressive and natural beauties of Gerence Bay, offers an untouched beach\nexperience since there are no facilities. Located 30 kilometers from the\ncenter, this bay stands out for its natural landscape and peaceful atmosphere.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The road to Gerence Bay is rugged,\nmaking it about a 40-minute drive from the center. However, this journey is\ndefinitely worth it to enjoy the unique scenery that the bay has to offer.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Ovab\u00fck\u00fc Beach<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Ovab\u00fck\u00fc Beach, one of Dat\u00e7a\u2019s hidden\nbeauties, not just offers a peaceful atmosphere, but also provides escape from\nthe stress of modern life. Located just 15 kilometers from the Dat\u00e7a center,\nyou can reach this beach in about 20 minutes by car. The name Ovab\u00fck\u00fc comes\nfrom the wide plain-like structure surrounding it. Known for its clean and\nserene atmosphere, this beach is an excellent spot for a pleasant day.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Hay\u0131tb\u00fck\u00fc Bay<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Hay\u0131tb\u00fck\u00fc Bay, one of Dat\u00e7a\u2019s natural\nparadises, is a neighbor of Ovab\u00fck\u00fc and presents a perfect blend of green and\nblue. Located 15 kilometers from Dat\u00e7a center, Hay\u0131tb\u00fck\u00fc is one of the favorite\nbays of Mesudiye Village. The bay is accessible via rugged roads, but the journey is definitely\nworth it considering the peace and natural beauty it offers upon arrival. Its\nstony beach makes it an ideal choice for visitors seeking a quiet and natural\natmosphere.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Karg\u0131 Bay<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Karg\u0131 Bay, situated just 3 kilometers\nfrom the Dat\u00e7a center, is one of the most beautiful bays in the region. It is\nreachable on foot from the city center in about 30 minutes, and there are also\npublic transport services available for easy access.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Surrounded by mountains, Karg\u0131 Bay\nminimizes the impact of the wind, providing a calm and warm sea. Thanks to the\nshallow waters, visitors can use the piers to enter the water. The beach,\nconsisting of sand rather than stones, makes Karg\u0131 Bay one of Dat\u00e7a\u2019s popular\nbeaches, captivating visitors with this feature.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
