Fethiye is an important settlement\nknown as “Telmessos” in ancient times by the Lycians. It came under\nPersian control in 545 BC and was later captured by Alexander the Great in 333\nBC. After Alexander’s death, it remained under the rule of Ptolemy, the King of\nEgypt, and later came under the control of the Roman Empire. The city was\nreferred to as “Makri” (or Me\u011fri) in 13th and 14th-century sources.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Following the division of the Roman\nEmpire, Fethiye became part of the Byzantine Empire. In 1261, the region was\ntaken from the Byzantines by Salpakis Mantakhias, the founder of the Mente\u015f\u00e2\nprincipality, and it came under Ottoman control in 1424.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

During the Ottoman period, the city was\nknown as “Me\u011fri.” In 1914, it was renamed “Fethiye” in\nhonor of Fethi Bey, one of the first Turkish pilots and the first aviation martyr.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Located 24 kilometers from Fethiye,\nnear \u00dcz\u00fcml\u00fc Village, Cadianda has been a significant settlement throughout\nhistory. Excavations conducted by the Fethiye Archaeology Museum have uncovered\nkey remains of the city, including a sports complex, theater, monumental tomb,\nand agora. These structures provide valuable insights into Cadianda’s ancient\narchitecture and social organization.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Ancient City of Telmessos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

Lycia, known as the “Land of\nLights” in ancient times, is located on the Teke Peninsula between Fethiye\nand Antalya. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

The Lycians, known for their unique\nlanguage, matriarchal way of life, rock monuments, and tombs, have a significant\nplace in history due to their passion for freedom and independence. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Telmessos is the ancient name of this\nregion in Fethiye and is named after the son of the god Apollo, Telmessos.\nEntering the dominion of the Persians, Romans, and Byzantines from the 5th\ncentury BC, Telmessos managed to preserve its distinctive character throughout\nthese periods. One of the most impressive surviving artifacts is the rock tomb\nbuilt for Amintas, the son of Hermapios, in the 4th century BC. This tomb is\nnotable for its architecture, which resembles an Ionic-style temple. There are sarcophagus-type\ntombs and ancient theatre, which are among the outstanding examples of Lycian art and stone workmanship.\nEspecially, the examples in the garden of the Government Office, the\nnecropolis, and those facing the pier showcase this historical heritage.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Kayak\u00f6y<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

Kayak\u00f6y was built on the remains of the\nKarmylassos city dating back to 3000 BC and consists of two different\nsettlements. The first of these is Levisse, which was abandoned in 1922 due to\nthe population exchange and became a ruin. Today, Levisse is considered a\nliving open-air museum and attracts tourists.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

The second is the village of Kay\u0131,\nwhich is included in the Ottoman survey books from 1512 until today. This area\nwhere the Kay\u0131 and Karake\u00e7ili Nomads lived in the 1400s has been a living space\nfor both Turks and Greeks for many years. While the Greeks lived in the houses\nof the village, the Turks continued their lives in the surrounding valleys.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Located just 5 kilometers from the\ncenter of Fethiye, \u00c7al\u0131\u015f Beach is one of the region’s primary accommodation and\nentertainment hubs. Opposite the beach is Knight Island, which marks the\nentrance to Fethiye Port. \u00c7al\u0131\u015f Beach is easily accessible via municipal public\ntransport and small boats from the sea. Additionally, this beach is an\nimportant nesting area for Caretta caretta turtles and includes \u00c7al\u0131\u015f Nature\nPark-Bird Paradise, which is home to 219 bird species.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00d6l\u00fcdeniz<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

\u00d6l\u00fcdeniz, often described in tourism\nliterature as the “paradise granted by the gods,” is a world-renowned\ntourist destination. Surrounded by pine forests, its warm sea and kilometers of\nsandy beach make it a natural marvel. \u00d6l\u00fcdeniz consists of two parts: the first\nis Belce\u011fiz Beach, which extends from the bay to the lagoon and has waves; the\nsecond is the calm and shallow real \u00d6l\u00fcdeniz located in the lagoon area.\nAdditionally, \u00d6l\u00fcdeniz is one of the world’s most ideal locations for\nparagliding.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Butterfly Valley<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

Butterfly Valley, one of the most\nbeautiful bays of Fethiye, is located in an area of ten hectares on a steep\nvalley floor at the slopes of Babada\u011f, one of the 100 mountains proposed to be\nprotected as a world heritage site due to its endemic varieties. In this\nMediterranean Valley famous for its butterfly diversity, it is possible to\nobserve 30 day butterfly species and 40 night butterfly species for 9 to 10\nmonths, starting in spring. The most famous is the Tiger Butterfly. Butterfly\nValley can be reached in half an hour by shuttle boat departing from \u00d6l\u00fcdeniz.\nIn 1995, the valley was declared as a first-degree natural protected area and\nthere are no accommodation facilities since no construction is allowed. You can\nstay in tents, sleeping bags or wooden arbour.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
