K\u00f6yce\u011fiz was first settled by the\nCarians and Leleges around 3000 BC. This information is mentioned in the\nartifacts of historian Herodotus, geographer Strabo, and poet Homer. The\nremains of cities, fortresses, aqueducts, agricultural terraces, and rock tombs\nin the region carry the traces of these early settlements to the present day.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Kaunos, known as an important port\ncity, was established on the shores of Lake K\u00f6yce\u011fiz. Kaunos played a key role\nin the trade and maritime transportation of Caria and later came under the rule\nof Alexander the Great. During the Roman period, the deforestation and\nresulting erosion in the surrounding areas led to the region being covered by\nswamps, which caused a decline in population. However, during the Byzantine\nperiod, the area was revitalized after the swamps were drained.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The region was taken from the\nByzantines in 1261 by Salpakis Mantakhias, known as Mente\u015fe Bey, the founder of\nthe Mente\u015fe Principality, and came under the control of the Ottoman Empire in\n1424.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Main Historical and Archaeological Destinations<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Kaunos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Kaunos is located in Southwestern\nAnatolia, within the borders of K\u00f6yce\u011fiz District of Mu\u011fla Province, to the\nwest of Dalyan neighborhood and Dalyan Stream. First introduced to the\nscientific world in 1840 and with excavations continuing since 1966, Kaunos is\nrecognized as an important archaeological site. It is mentioned in the Lycian\nversion of the Trilingual Inscription at Letoon that Kaunos was founded by the\nindigenous people of Anatolia and was originally known by the local name\n“Kbid”. This name was used by the Kaunians until the 4th century BC,\nafter which it was changed with the Hellenization of the city, following\ncolonization by the Greeks, who introduced Greek names as in other Anatolian\ncities.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Kaunos was established on a peninsula\nthat extends towards the sea, with the Acropolis (Persikon) at 150 meters high\nand the smaller Acropolis (Herakleion) to the southwest. The city was\nadministratively divided into “demos” and governed by judges known as\n“dikastai.” Additionally, Kaunos included dependent settlements known\nas “komes.” The earliest traces of settlement date back to the 7th\ncentury BC, and the city remained inhabited until the late Byzantine period.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Natural and Cultural Heritage<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
K\u00f6yce\u011fiz Lake<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Located at the western edge of the\nMediterranean Region, this lake lies within the borders of K\u00f6yce\u011fiz district\nand is known for its sulphurous, brackish water. The lake’s elevation above sea\nlevel is 8 meters, and its depth varies between 15 and 150 meters. Typically\ncalm, the lake is suitable for water sports like water skiing during eight\nmonths of the year. The Dalyan Strait, known in ancient times as Dalbis Steam,\nconnects the lake to the sea, extending 8 miles and reaching the sea through a\nreed-filled route.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Along the coastline lies the famous Iztuzu\nBeach, which spans a width of 50 to 200 meters and stretches 5.5 kilometers in\nlength. The lake was separated from the sea due to the gulf’s mouth being\nblocked by alluvial deposits, yet it still continues to discharge its water\ninto the sea.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The small island within the lake is locally\nknown as Prison Island. It was historically used for military purposes and\nlater as a prison. Ruins of a Genoese castle can still be seen on the island.\nIt is also referred to as Lover\u2019s Island; according to legend, it was where two\nyoung lovers sought refuge when their families refused to let them marry.\nHowever, the couple met a tragic fate on the island when they were bitten by a\nsnake and died.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Sultaniye Hot Springs<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Located in the southwest of Lake\nK\u00f6yce\u011fiz, at the foothills of Mount \u00d6lemez, the history of the Sultaniye Hot\nSprings dates back thousands of years. These hot springs were known to have\nbeen used by the Kaunians around 100 BC and were expanded during the Byzantine\nperiod with the addition of accommodation facilities. However, these facilities\nare now submerged under the waters of K\u00f6yce\u011fiz Lake. During the Roman period,\nthe hot springs were converted into a comprehensive hospital, with the inscription\n“Death cannot enter here in the name of the gods” placed at the\nentrance. The name “Mount \u00d6lemez” (meaning “Mount\nImmortal”) is derived from this historic phrase.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Sultaniye Hot Springs offer direct\ntreatment for various health issues such as rheumatism, kidney and urinary\ntract disorders, metabolic disorders, mental fatigue, skin conditions, and gynaecological\ndiseases. The water of the springs contains calcium chloride, calcium sulphate,\ncalcium sulphide, bromide, radon, and radioactive substances. With a water\ntemperature of 39\u00b0C, Sultaniye Hot Springs is the hot spring with the highest\nradioactivity in T\u00fcrkiye and ranks second in the world in terms of radon\nlevels, following the hot spring in Indonesia. The high radioactivity endows\nthe springs with rehabilitative properties.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Toparlar Waterfall<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Toparlar Waterfall, located just 8 km\nfrom K\u00f6yce\u011fiz, is a refreshing escape for nature lovers and trekking\nenthusiasts, even during the hottest times of the year. The waterfall is\naccessible via a pleasant 15-minute nature walk.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Sweetgum Trees and Citrus<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
The sweetgum tree, also known as the\nAnatolian Sweetgum or Liquidambar tree, can grow up to 20 meters tall, with\nbroad leaves and a deciduous nature. It has thick branches and a broad canopy,\nresembling a plane tree. It thrives in moist areas such as floodplains, swamps,\nand riverbanks. The tree favors a temperate climate, plenty of sunlight, and\ngrows well in deep, moist, and sandy soils. The sweetgum tree forms forests in\nonly two regions worldwide and one of them is in K\u00f6yce\u011fiz. Sweetgum oil is used\nin various industries, including medicine and cosmetics. Besides, K\u00f6yce\u011fiz is\nknown for producing some of T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s best citrus fruits.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
K\u00f6yce\u011fiz Bird Sanctuary<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
K\u00f6yce\u011fiz and its surroundings offer a\nrich diversity of bird species. Over 180 species of birds, including both\nnative and migratory species, live in the region. Each year, nature\nenthusiasts, particularly from the UK and other European countries, visit\nK\u00f6yce\u011fiz in groups for bird watching.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
