Marmaris has a history that dates back\nto 2000 BC. Findings during excavations in Nimara Cave on Bedir Island in 2007\nconfirm this timeline. The region was named “Karia,” which means\n“Land of the Carians.” The abundance offered by the Aegean and Mediterranean\ncoasts has continually made Marmaris an attractive place. The city has served\nas an important gateway to Rhodes and the Aegean Islands, and as a result, it\nhas been influenced by many civilizations over time.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
During visits to Marmaris, you can see\ntraces of such civilizations as the Carians, Rhodians, and island cultures, as\nwell as Egyptian, Assyrian, Ionian, Persian, Macedonian, Syrian, Roman,\nByzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman civilizations. Fiskos is the earliest known name\nof the city, and its remains can still be seen today at Asartepe. It is said\nthat Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent considered the fortress here inadequate\nand referred to it as “Mimar As!” which over time evolved into the\nname “Marmaris.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Main Historical and Archaeological Destinations<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Physkos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Physkos is known as the first port city\nof the ancient region of Caria and the center of other settlements. ” Physkos”\nmeans “Land of Nature” in the Carian language, a name derived from\nthe region’s abundance of natural elements and beauty.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The remains of Physkos, which date back\nto around 3400 BC, are located in Asartepe, the north of Marmaris city center.\nThe history of this ancient city reflects the region’s significance and rich\npast.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Amos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Near Turun\u00e7, on a hill to the northwest\nof Kumlub\u00fck Bay, the ancient settlement of Amos features a theater, a temple,\nand some statue bases. The theater is quite well-preserved; the seating areas,\nside walls, and the separation of the three rooms in the stage house are\nclearly distinguishable.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Loryma (Bozukkale)<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Located in Bozukkale on the\nsouthwestern tip of the Bozburun Peninsula, Loryma is notable for its\nwidespread ruins. The most impressive surviving structure is the well-preserved\ncastle on Burunba\u015f\u0131. Bozukkale Bay is an important stop for Blue Voyage boats\nand yachts.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Kedrai (Sedir Island)<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Sedir Island in the Gulf of G\u00f6kova is\nfamous for the ancient city of Kedrai and the renowned Cleopatra Beach. Kedrai\nwas a Carian city later connected to Rhodes, and its name comes from the cedar\ntrees abundant on the island. Sedir Island is a walled settlement area with\nruins including walls, towers, the foundations of the Temple of Apollo, a\ntheater, an agora, and a city necropolis.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Hydas (Selimiye)<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Located on the northern part of the\nBozburun Peninsula, in Selimiye Bay (Kam\u0131\u015fl\u0131 Bay), the ancient city of Hydas is\nnotable for its various ruins. The city features remnants of city walls and a\nsquare-planned tomb monument. Three kilometers from Hydas, there is a coastal\nwatchtower with several graves on it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Erine<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Erine is located in 2 km from the\nvillage of Hisar\u00f6n\u00fc, which is 20 km from Marmaris-Dat\u00e7a road when turning\ntowards Bozburun. The ancient site can be reached by traveling 3 km from\nHisar\u00f6n\u00fc village and contains ruins from the Roman period.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Castabus<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
An ancient site reachable by a one-hour\nclimb from Hisar\u00f6n\u00fc Plain. It is located on a temple platform from the 4th\ncentury BC, featuring Ionian design with Doric elements. The foundation of the\ntemple and the remarkable walls supporting the platform have been preserved to\nthis day. There are also theatre ruins in the south.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Phoenix<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Phoenix is a Carian city located 4 km\noutside of Ta\u015fl\u0131ca village. The city’s tombs are encountered first along the\npath. The city’s agora is a well-preserved structural ruin, and its main necropolis\n(tombs) is located in a hole between Ta\u015fl\u0131ca and Asar hill. The city\u2019s\nacropolis is at Asartepe.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Bybassos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Bybassos is located on the slope of the\nhill where Orhaniye Village is at now. The city\u2019s wall ruins can be seen\nscattered in a forested area.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Euthenna (Alt\u0131nsivrisi\/Karacas\u00f6\u011f\u00fct)<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
A city of Rhodian origin, located on\nthe Alt\u0131nsivrisi hill approximately 2 km southeast at Karacas\u00f6\u011f\u00fct Village. Here\nat the city of necropolis, wall remnants, rock-cut tombs, and cisterns are\npresent.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Amnistos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Represents an ancient city located on a\npromontory near Karacas\u00f6\u011f\u00fct. The remains of city walls and an ancient bay wall\non the seaside have survived from this settlement to these days.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Thyssanos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
An ancient settlement located on a hill\n1 km southwest of S\u00f6\u011f\u00fct village. This area, which has not been excavated,\ncontains several wall fragments, ground traces, and wall ruins.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
