As one of the oldest cities in the\nCaria region, Mente\u015fe was referred to as “Mobolla” in ancient\nsources. Around 3400 BC, a tribe led by a leader named “Kar” settled\nin the region. In the 1000s BC, the area came under the control of the Dorians and\njoined the Pergamon Roman Alliance in 228 BC, eventually becoming a Roman\nprovince in 133 BC.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
With the Turkish conquest of Anatolia,\nMente\u015fe came under the rule of the Anatolian Sel\u00e7uk State. After the break-up\nof the Anatolian Sel\u00e7uk State, the region came under the control of the Mente\u015f\u00e2\nPrincipality in 1261. In 1391, the area was included in the Ottoman lands by\nY\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m Bayezid, but came under Timur\u2019s control in 1402, and was given back to\nthe Mente\u015f\u00e2 Principality by Timur. During the reign of Murad II, it once again\nbecame part of the Ottoman Empire and was named Mente\u015fe Banner.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
On October 30, 1913, Mente\u015fe Banner was\nseparated from Ayd\u0131n Province and became a province, having the name of Mu\u011fla.\nOn December 6, 2012, under Law No. 6360, Mu\u011fla Central was restructured and\nrenamed Mente\u015fe.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Main Historical and Archaeological Destinations<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Mobolla Ancient City<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
To the south of Mu\u011fla city center,\nnortheast of Saburhane Neighborhood, on the rocky hill known as Masa Da\u011f\u0131 or\nAsar, lie the ruins of the ancient city of Mobolla. The earliest known name of\nthis ancient settlement is “Mogla” (<\/span>\u039c\u03ce\u03b3\u03bb\u03b1<\/span>). An inscription dating back to the 2nd century BC\ndefinitively shows that the city’s name was “Mobolla” (<\/span>\u039c\u03cc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03b1<\/span>). In the 10th century AD, the\nsettlement was referred to as “Mogola” (<\/span>\u039c\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bb\u03b1<\/span>) at the pieces of Emperor Constantine\nVII Porphyrogenitus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The ruins of ancient Mobolla are\nsurrounded by city walls on the northern and western sides. At the starting\npoint of the city walls, there are numerous scattered tomb chambers extending\nto Basmac\u0131 Stream. These tomb chambers stand out as part of the settlement\nsurrounded by city walls.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Among the remains of the city, there\nare three open-air temples, rock tomb chambers, sarcophagi, rock-cut graves\nknown as “popular type graves,” wells, rock dwellings, cisterns, and\nrock chambers believed to have been converted into living spaces.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Trolian Park<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Near \u00d6zl\u00fcce village in the east of\nMu\u011fla, in the Kakl\u0131catepe area, fossils unearthed during excavations are\nexhibited in the Natural History section of the Mu\u011fla Museum as Trolian Era\nfinds. Excavations and research at Kakl\u0131catepe began in the late 1992, and the\nfossils findings have been classified into such various groups such as kitchen\nutensils, rhinoceros, elephant, pig, horse, and carnivorous animals.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
These fossils date back to the Trolian\nEra, a period approximately 5 – 9 million years ago, covering a wide region\nfrom East Asia to Spain. The Trolian Era is named after this period because\nexamples from this time are best preserved in the Teruel Basin.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Arasta Bazaar<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
The main road connecting the city to\nthe outside world was the Izmir-Ayd\u0131n-\u00c7ine, Tavas-Denizli route. This caravan\nroute passed through Mu\u011fla and reached the city. Camel caravans would enter the\ncity from Sekiba\u015f\u0131 Street and follow this route to reach the city center. At\nthe center, they would stay at such inns as Ya\u011fc\u0131lar Han\u0131 and Kocahan, known as\ncommercial centers of the urban site area. The caravans would then leave the\nSaburhane neighborhood and travel via the \u201cY\u0131lanl\u0131 Da\u011f\u0131 Road\u201d to Tavas and from\nthere to Denizli.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Leading accommodation places on the\nhistorical caravan route included Ya\u011fc\u0131lar Inn, \u0130brahim Inn, Bac\u0131lar Inn,\nBalc\u0131o\u011flu Inn, Konakalt\u0131 Inn and Kocahan, which was among the liveliest places\nof the city in the past. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
There were guilds of various\nprofessions in the Arasta region, and these guilds took their names from common\nliving spaces. For example, “Demirciler Arastas\u0131” (Blacksmiths’\nBazaar) and “Bak\u0131rc\u0131lar Arastas\u0131” (Coppersmiths’ Bazaar) are still\nreferred to by these names today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Karaba\u011flar Plateau<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
The Karaba\u011flar Plateau, where the\nMente\u015fe citizens spent their summer months for many years, holds an important\nplace in the city’s historical process. Once a primary source of livelihood for\nthe region, this plateau played a crucial role in agricultural production and\nhas partially maintained this feature today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The plateau has been of great\nsignificance as part of Mente\u015fe\u2019s closed economic structure over the centuries.\nHalf of the year was spent at the plateau, where daily needs were met and food\nitems such as dried vegetables, tomato paste, tarhana, sausage, roasted meat,\npasta, and molasses were prepared for winter. Each household had its vineyard,\nand vinification was also practiced on the plateau. The Karaba\u011flar Plateau holds\nan important place in Mu\u011fla\u2019s historical and cultural heritage as an extension\nof traditional urban life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Within and around the Karaba\u011flar\nPlateau, there are many parks and cafes nestled in nature.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Main Bays and Beaches<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Akb\u00fck<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Akb\u00fck Bay, one of the most unique\nvacation spots in the Gulf of G\u00f6kova, is a peaceful retreat known for its serenity,\ncalmness, and clear waters. Located on the northern side of the gulf, the bay\nfeatures a small dock and a few restaurants. Akb\u00fck is 48 kilometers away from Mente\u015fe\ncity center and stands out among the region’s natural beauties.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
You can visit the ruins of the ancient\ncity of Caria and Keramos in Akb\u00fck Bay. The bay can be reached via a\n25-kilometer coastal road from Akyaka or a 20-kilometer asphalt road from \u00d6ren.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
