The ancient name of Milas is Mylasos or\nMylasa. This city, which was an important center of Caria and known as the\n\u201cCity of Temples,\u201d housed the national God Zeus Karios Temple of the Carians.\nMilas has a rich history with an uninterrupted cultural heritage spanning 3,000\nyears and home to the remains of 27 ancient cities within its boundaries.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Some of these ancient cities include\nimportant sites such as \u0130asos, Labranda, Euromos, and Heraklia. Throughout\nhistory, Milas has carried the influences of Carian, Byzantine, Sel\u00e7uk, Mente\u015f\u00e2\nPrincipality and Ottoman civilizations. Additionally, it holds a significant\nposition in yacht tourism with its coastlines along the Gulf of G\u00f6kova and\nMandalya. Captain Cousteau, after visiting these areas, remarked, \u201cThose\nseeking paradise on Earth will find it in G\u00f6kova.\u201d The easiest way to reach\nMilas is through the international Milas-Bodrum Airport.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Main Historical and Archeological Destinations<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Gumuskesen Grave Monument<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
One of the visible remnants of the city\nof Mylasa is the G\u00fcm\u00fc\u015fkesen Grave Monument, which is located in the G\u00fcm\u00fc\u015fl\u00fck\narea in Mu\u011fla province, Milas district. The burial monument, which was\nconstructed in the shape of a mausoleum, using materials gathered from older\nstructures. It is accepted that the G\u00fcm\u00fc\u015fkesen Grave Monument and the Baltali\nGate were constructed during the same time period based on the decorative\naspects. The structure is divided into three sections: the burial chamber, the\nfloor in the middle that is ringed by columns, and the pyramidal top cover. This\nMausoleum dates back to the 2nd century AD. The lower portion of the top cover\nis ornamented with botanical and geometrical patterns. It is from the 2nd century.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Heraklia<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Once an important port city, Herakleia\nlies before the blue waters of Lake Bafa, with the Be\u015f Parmak Mountains\n(anciently known as the Latmos Mountains) rising behind it. The old city of\nLatmos was situated a bit northeast of the present location; however, it was\nmoved to its current site during the Hellenistic period and renamed Herakleia,\ninspired by the semi-divine hero Herakles. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The city is surrounded by 6.5\nkilometers of walls supported by 26 towers, reflecting both the importance\nplaced on the city’s defense and the luxury of the ancient period. The\n“Latmos Prehistoric Rock Paintings” found in the Latmos Mountains\naround Lake Bafa reveal that the region’s history dates back to the 6th\nmillennium BC.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
\u00d6ren \u2013 Keramos<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Located on the Bodrum-Milas road,\naccessible by a 45 km asphalt road that branches off at the Be\u00e7in junction, the\narea formerly known as Gereme, now \u00d6ren, is situated on the shores of G\u00f6kova\nBay. The city center is a bit inland from the coast. Along the beach, there are\ntwo- storey houses with gardens, small hotels, and guesthouses. The ancient\ncity ruins of Keramos can be visited between \u00d6ren and Akyaka.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Natural and Cultural Heritage<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Bafa Lake<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
The S\u00f6ke Plain was once a vast bay\ncovered by the sea about 2,000 years ago. The alluvial deposits carried by the\nB\u00fcy\u00fck Menderes River filled this bay, transforming it into a plain. Today, Lake\nBafa remains as a remnant of the sea. The lake features two islands. Bafa Lake\nis renowned for its freshwater fish such as mullet, bass, and eel.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
The islands on the lake are home to\nmonasteries and churches, with the oldest being the “Monastery of the Seven.”\nImportant Christian events depicted include the resurrection of Lazarus, the\ncrucifixion of Jesus, burial themes, and the anastasis (resurrection) scene,\nfeaturing priceless frescoes depicting scenes from the life, deeds, and death\nof Jesus Christ. The lake’s surroundings are covered with olive groves, and\nmeals at the coastal restaurants are typically prepared with olive oil.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Handwoven Carpet<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Milas is one of the oldest settlements\nof the Turkmen tribes. The region has preserved this characteristic in terms of\ncustoms, traditions, and clothing. Carpets with distinctive features are woven\nin the Milas region. The carpet tradition is believed to have started in the\n16th century with the weaving of prayer rugs. The carpets dated to the 18th and\n19th centuries are distinguished by their patterns and colors, categorized as\nclassical and Baroque styles. From the 18th and 19th centuries onwards, Milas\ncarpets were made entirely of wool. The carpets were dyed using root and\nnatural dyes. These carpets, known as Milas Carpets, are still woven in\nKaracahisar, \u00d6ren, D\u00f6rttepe, Gereme, Bozalan, \u0130kizk\u00f6y, P\u0131nark\u00f6y, Mezgit,\nG\u00fcrce\u011fiz, Ak\u00e7akaya, and many other villages.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Uyku Valley<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Uyku Valley and the G\u00f6k\u00e7eler Cave,\nwhich is a Natural Conservation Area, can be visited with day trips. There are\ntwo entrances to the valley. The entrance of the G\u00f6k\u00e7eler Cave is quite wide.\nThe cave initially opens into a large hall, with a significant gallery to the\nleft. When you ascend slightly to the right, you can reach another gallery\nfilled with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as small pools, through a\nnarrow passage.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Tuzla (Bargylia)<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
The Tuzla Wetland covers an area of 380\nhectares. It is a winter habitat and feeding ground for migratory birds and is\nsurrounded by tamarisk, olive, and pine trees. Pelicans are among the most\ncommon bird species, along with mallards, teal, bean geese, Hungarian ducks,\ncoots, herons, geese, flamingos, moorhens, and marsh swallows. The wetland also\nprovides a rich fish population due to the abundance of plankton and aquatic\nplants.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
Olive<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
Milas has historically been a center\nfor olive production, with olive trees dating back approximately 8,000 years.\nOlive cultivation is a cornerstone of the Milas economy. Milas is one of\nTurkey’s most important olive production centers, with 52,900 hectares of its\n81,189 hectares of cultivated land covered by olive groves. The majority of the\nolive trees are of the Memecik variety.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
\u00c7omakda\u011f<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>
The distinctive feature of the \u00c7omakda\u011f\nis the \u00c7omakda\u011f houses, which masterfully blend the past with the present in\ntheir architectural style. The stone houses are noted for their aesthetically\npleasing chimneys. The interiors of the houses are just as colorful and\nimpressive as their exteriors. The ceilings and doors are adorned with examples\nof wood carving art. The women of \u00c7omakda\u011f village continue to preserve their\nnearly 500-year-old traditions and customs through their colorful attire.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
